Lanterns For Peace (Visibility / Sign Waving)
Physician for Social Responsibility (PSR) was founded in 1961 with a mission to achieve nuclear disarmament. PSR became, and continues to be, the medical and public health voice calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. At this critical time, PSR advocates for strong US leadership to keep the world safe from unfettered development, testing and use of nuclear weapons.
Every August, concerned citizens all over the world gather to remember the devastating impact of the US use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, during World War II.
In Madison, “Lanterns for Peace” will be on Friday, August 7th, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Tenney Park Shelter (E. Johnson St. at the Yahara River. Enter from Sherman Ave.). Participants will be able to make a lantern for peace or send letters to Congress for the cause. The lanterns made that night will then be put out on the water to drift in contemplative commemoration of those lost in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In April, earlier this year, President Barack Obama addressed the world, adamant in the struggle to eradicate the presence of nuclear weapons: “Today, I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” The U.S. can and must lead the world in the global elimination of these dangerous weapons. The Madison Lanterns for Peace commemoration is an opportunity for people of all ages to remember those who have died by the use of nuclear weapons in war, and to reflect on visions of a peaceful world.
