One of the more rousing cheers during the State of the Union last night came after President Obama called out the ridiculous ruling from the Supreme Court last week that threw open the door to a new flood of corporate cash into campaigns. The Bush boys, Justices Roberts and Alito, swore up and down during confirmation they weren’t “judicial activists,” wouldn’t “legislate from the bench” and then promptly overturned campaign finance legislation already passed in state after state, and essentially halting efforts in Wisconsin to toughen up existing laws.

Outside of the board rooms of Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, the conservative Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, the national Chamber of Commerce and now, apparently, the conservative wing of the U.S. Supreme Court, there aren’t too many folks in Wisconsin or around the nation who think the real problem with our politics is that corporations don’t have enough power. The Citizens United decision is an assault on our democracy, and President Obama was right to criticize the judgment of the court.

But apparently, “Justice” Alito simply does not approve of the criticism the President expressed on behalf of us “not-CEO” types. As legislators from both sides of the aisle rose to cheer the verbal smack down of the corporate wing of the court, Alito broke down and shook his head, mouthing “No way, not true,” while the other Justices sat stone-faced.

When I saw Alito shaking his head in defiance of the facts, I couldn’t stop myself from yelling: ‘You Lie!’
