Yesterday the state Elections Board ruled that Mark Green must give back money that he received from PACs that were not registered in Wisconsin. Green's campaign has given the same tired excuse that they have spent the money, so they cannot return it. This was the same excuse given when Green was asked to rid himself of the dirty money that he received from indicted Congressman Tom DeLay.
The right wing is outraged that the Elections Board is making Congressman Mark Green follow the state law and give back the money. They complain that somehow Governor Doyle is responsible for the decision. Two points need to be made here. First, the NONPARTISAN GROUP Wisconsin Democracy Campaign is the organization that caught Green red handed and brought the issue before the Election Board. It would be hard to say that they were somehow a tool of the Governor since they have not been shy in criticizing him. Second, the only member of the Elections Board that did not belong to the two major parties voted with the Democrats on the Board. That would be the Libertarian member who according to some reports led the charge. Are these bitter Republicans saying that now Doyle controls the Libertarian Party?
Congressman Mark Green has 10 days to get rid of the tainted cash, if early statements are any indication; it seems that he will try to cling to the money. There is even some talk of the Republicans rushing to court to file a frivolous lawsuit hoping that they can find some activist judge to help Green.
The next 10 days will be telling. Will Congressman Mark Green show that he has an ounce of Wisconsin values or will he show the Washington D.C. values that favor dirty special interest cash over all else?
