Over the weekend the Capital Times reported that state Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton) is drafting a proposed amendment to the state constitution that "would ban discrimination and open the way for state-sanctioned civil unions." Erpenbach says that the measure would honor the ban on gay marriages but would address the potential problems in the second sentence of the amendment which could endanger civil unions.
In several past polls Wisconsinites appear to approve of allowing unmarried couples to have civil union status. Also, it was argued throughout the debate over the ban on gay marriage that the amendment was not intended and would not ban civil unions. If the supporters of the marriage amendment were being honest with the public prior to Election Day, then they should be able to support Erpenbach's proposed amendment which would seek to further protect civil union benefits.
