The Partisans vs. The Professionals

Shortly after taking office State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen began handing out jobs to partisan cronies. For example, he made Ray Taffora his Deputy. He did this even though Taffora had no real prosecutorial experience and was little more than a politically connected corporate hack. Taffora served as counsel for Tommy Thompson and assisted former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen in redistricting and negotiating an end to the caucuses. Just last month we learned that Van Hollen not only hired his former campaign field director, put then promoted him repeatedly. Although his background outside of politics is mostly unknown, Van Hollen saw fit to promote him to his current job as a DCI analyst. J.B. has been quite kind to those that supported his political ambitions. That has not necessarily been the case for others working at DOJ even though they are well respected by their peers and have long time law enforcement credentials.

Last month as Van Hollen was again promoting his former campaign field director, he was busy chasing out one of the most respected criminal investigators in the state. Jim Warren suddenly “retired” saying in emails that it was “shoved down his throat” and that dealing with the Van Hollen administration was “constant war.” Now the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that Van Hollen has demoted a 14 year arson and homicide investigator. Apparently she wrote joking emails about J.B. Van Hollen (and/or his political crony hires) and the ever sensitive AG saw fit to cut her pay by nearly 40 percent. Rather than tap her expertise and knowledge, Van Hollen would rather make a statement and throw it all away. That is not good for DOJ and that is not good for the people of Wisconsin. In Van Hollen’s Department of Justice there really does appear to be a “war”. It is between the partisans and the professionals and unfortunately the partisans are currently winning.

What a joke

Jennings is working as a $12 an hour basically entry level analyst job that he is clearly qualified to handle. As for Tafora, wouldn't you expect an AG to hire a respected and proven attorney who he trusts to serve as his right hand guy? It's not as if Tafora is straight our of law school.

This is the best you have? Pretty sad, guys, pretty sad.

How about analyzing Roger Breske's experience with the railroad industry instead? 80k is a heck of a lot more than $12 an hour. Or what about that kid Tony Earl called in a favor for?

"proven attorney" does not equal prosecutorial experience...not all attorneys are qualified for the job...unless you're j.b. and only looking for political connections and partisan loyalty.

the bottom line is that j.b. brought in political cronies with no real law enforcement background and is chasing out the well respected law enforcement professionals.

Yeah, move along, nothing to see here.

Take it from Fraley who we can all trust because he was a paid political consultant to the Van Hollen campaign.

JB's right hand man (Taffora) coordinates the removal of the agent who headed up the department that investigated disgraced former Speaker Scott Jensen ... who just happened to have directed literally millions of state tax dollars in legal fees to Taffora's firm.

Yep, nothing to see here.

Get Real
By Fraley May 22nd 2008 at 5:13 pm EDT
You guys are a hoot. All worried about the lack of prosecutorial experience of the deputy, when the libs in this state went all out for Falk in the AG election in November 2006, despite the fact that she....

wait for it....

Never Prosecuted a Criminal Case in Her Life, Not Once, Ever. (tm)

what i'm waiting for is for you to address the actual issues raised above, rather than deflecting and changing the subject. looks like i'm gonna "wait for it" in vain.

the simple fact is that j.b. hired political cronies and is chasing out career professionals. i'm surprised that you "law and order" types find that acceptable (or maybe i'm not).

btw, didn't Falk spend quite a few years working at DOJ?

It's worse than that....

Carolyn Kelly is a 25 year veteran of the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Indeed, she was the first female state fire marshall in the entire U.S. And now JB's demoted Joell Schigur, who ran the nationally recognized Internet Crimes Against Children unit of DCI. Several years ago she was named investigator of the year, by the ICAC agents' national association. When One Wisconsin Now and AM 620's Jeff Wagner agree, there must be a REAL PROBLEM! Is it JB for AG or JB's a...well....???
