It just never ends, does it?

Now, rich corporate CEO’s are all a-flutter over *gasp* paying workers a fair wage. In Gov. Doyle’s budget, a new provision requires companies that receive help from the state to pay their workers the prevailing wage.

J. Michael Mooney,  chairman of the MLG group, an investment and real estate developer, called the idea of a paying a decent wage to workers “economic suicide.” A quick look at MLG’s Real Estate Investment website shows they have a portfolio value of $330 million. They have a “presence” in four states: Wisconsin, Florida, Minnesota and Texas. The “Executive Board” of MLG is a bunch of rich white guys. I guess the diversity policy at MLG only applies to what label designer suit each white male board member wears. Excuse me if I don’t sympathize with this pompous Uncle Money Bags.

“This would be a bad idea in good times,” Mooney also says. So when the economy is down, not the right time for fair pay. And when the economy is up isn’t good either. I’m still trying to figure out when would be a good time for Mr. Mooney to share some of his wealth with his workers…yeah not finding one. This guy and the corporatists at WMC will NEVER find time for fairness.

But I guess there’s a part of me that expects it from these top 2%-ers. Paying their workers a fair wage would mean less money in their pockets, and while it certainly is greedy, self-serving, and un-American,  it’s the standard of these flag-waving, chest-bumping robber barons. After all, this is the same crowd that cheered while President Bush cut taxes for the rich in a time of war! Guys like Mooney and WMC don’t want to pay their fair share to support the troops, and they don’t want to pay their fair share to the workers.  They never have, and if they had their way, they never would.

If you can’t pay a prevailing wage in Wisconsin to your employees then you shouldn’t be in business. There, I said it. Go. Leave. Get out already. Take WMC with you. Then finally the real people of Wisconsin might get a break from the never-ending crying and bitching and moaning from greedy businesses who don’t give a shit about workers. Workers are the ones who make you rich! We’re the ones who buy your goods. We’re the ones that labor endlessly, and whose efforts these corporatists so willingly exploit. It’s the workers who toil away for whatever scraps they can grab from the owners who hoard their wealth.

There are lots of companies out there who would gladly take help from the state AND pay their workers fairly. If Mooney doesn’t want help from the taxpayers, he can stick it. Don’t take the money then. That leaves more room for the kind of companies we want here in Wisconsin: profitable companies that care about community, the environment, and paying their workers fairly.

Last week, One Wisconsin Now pointed out how the non, non-ideological Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance and its long-time face Todd Berry can be found this coming weekend speaking to the right-wing freakfest that is the Americans for Petroleum, er... Americans for Prosperity event in Milwaukee.

A who's who of state Republican electeds will be on hand to bemoan the irresponsible economic policies of the last eight years of Bush and 14 years of Jensen-Gard-Huebsch the last month of President Obama and Wisconsin Democrats.

Also on the docket, and fresh from her appearance at the Republican Lincoln Day dinner, Department of Public Instruction candidate Rose Fernandez.   Read More »
Much to the chagrin of the corporate honchos at WMC, strong unions ARE actually good for the economy, according to a new report by the Center for American Progress. Better yet, unions are good for the Wisconsin economy.  But perhaps most importantly, unions can actually help Wisconsin businesses weather this economic storm.

Of course, those of you still under the hypnosis of WMC’s never-ending stream of anti-union, anti-worker rhetoric and stances over the years (see here, here, here, here, and here), will no doubt crow that somehow workers getting a fair share of the wealth they helped create is a bad thing. “Bad for business” WMC and the conservo-bots will say. “Businesses will leave in droves” they’ll cry. But that’s just not the case. But what WMC really means is “The Corporate CEOs we represent deserve all the wealth. Forget the little guys and gals.”

Earth to WMC: if people have no money to spend, no one can buy your goods. After all, there’s only so many ultra-rich CEO’s you can sell stuff to, and not all of you manufacture private planes or gold-plated toilets. You need to expand your market—to the common folk. And what do unions do best? Help the workers to paid fairly, which means more cash to buy stuff--you know, the American way. Consumer spending drives 70% of the economy, and stronger unions mean more consumer spending, period. In Wisconsin between 2004 and 2007, union workers are paid, on average, 11.9% higher than their non-union counterparts. But union memberships are down dramatically: according to the CFAP study, unionization is down 50% since 1983. I wonder what parallels we can draw…who was in charge for the majority of that time in Wisconsin? Conservative corporatists at the Capitol and WMC.

Unionization numbers aren’t just declining because less people want to join. According to a Peter Hart Research Associates poll, 3 in 5 people would join a union if they could. Thanks largely to the scare tactics of WMC and groups like it (Club for Growth, Wisconsin Institute for Leadership, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce etc.), it’s harder today to join a union. And as I mentioned before, WMC’s lobbyists are busy as ever this session, working hard to block good pro-worker legislation. (here, here, and here).

That’s why legislation like the Employee Free Choice Act is so important. It will protect Wisconsin workers already in unions, and make it harder for employers to intimidate workers and prevent unionization. You can read more about the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) here, and as always, you can use OWN’s tools to contact your state and federal legislators and let them know how important EFCA is to Wisconsin, and to America.
What is it with Bucyrus in Milwaukee that attracts the worst of the worst on the right? It was only a short time ago that epic failure of a candidate John McCain visited the plant to tell us all “the fundamentals of the economy are strong.” That worked out well.

Now Scott Walker, literally and figuratively following in McCain’s footsteps, gave his “State of the County” speech Monday night at the same Bucyrus International plant. Given the implosion of the economy brought on by conservatives like Bush, McCain, and McCain right-hand-economic-man Phil Gramm, one would think Walker might want to distance himself from the failed policies of the Bush years and the McCain campaign. Think again. Walker trotted out the same old conservative talking points about “tax-cuts,” firmly toeing the Bush line.

“History shows that tax cuts lead to prosperity,” Walker said. What history is that? The last eight years, when Bush handed out billions to the wealthy and corporations while the economy went to garbage? Tax cuts for the rich in a time of war? Walker must be getting the official Bush Administration History Revision report. What about the history of the Great Depression and the New Deal which proved beyond any doubt that the type of stimulus Obama’s pushing, that is government spending and infrastructure construction, will work?   Read More »

WMC is always against corporations paying their fair share in taxes. Now, they’re using the economic downturn to try and frighten all of us into laying down while WMC rams its radical pro-corporate agenda down our throats.

In a new radio ad out this week, WMC is subjecting  hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin citizens who are paying their fair share to their audio propaganda sledgehammer. It seems the bottom dwellers at WMC are doing their darndest to capitalize on the fear many of us are feeling about the economy. Here's a sampling of the radio ad script:

“More than $200 million in new taxes on employers.
In a recession? That’s going to make things worse.
Wisconsin will be less competitive.
Our families will have fewer jos.
{With fewer jobs, our communities have fewer resources for schools, and parks, and
roads.}
When business taxes go up, businesses may not move here.”

Scared yet? Don't worry, the horror show continues.

A story in the Wisconsin State Journal today inexplicably gives a forum to some blow-hard from Dallas named Barry Asmus who spent the better part of his speaking engagement at the WMC annual Business Day in Madison railing against making the super-rich and gigantic corporations actually pay their fair share for the services they so willingly use. He didn’t even beat around the bush. “Don’t raise taxes on corporations or wealthy people” reads the leed.

Not surprisingly, this dolt sang HIGH the praises of Ronald Reagan throughout. But Asmus’ suckling of Reagan would make even Grover Norquist blush. According to Asmus, Reagan’s tax cuts for the wealthy ended 50 years of a “lousy” U.S. economy spanning the Great Depression up until 1983. Sorry, idiot says what? So one of the biggest explosions in the history of the world economy, after the New Deal and WWII, was “lousy?” Or the years of prosperity under Clinton? But his revisionist history and outright lies don’t stop there. Oh no.

Asmus then goes on to claim, in very Reagan-esque fashion, that thousands of “teenage boys” each own two to 15 homes, thanks to the “government-sponsored Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.” And his proof of this is?? Much like the welfare queens in Cadillacs, this sort of claim is nothing more than a neocon scare tactic these trolls use to attack the middle and lower class—making US to appear irresponsible, dumb, and unable to make informed decisions for ourselves. What about the banker’s who GAVE these people huge loans, knowing they couldn’t pay them back? I’m not about to claim that those who took big loans shouldn’t share some responsibility, but those mortgage lenders were preying on innocent people to steal their money and take their houses.

That this mouthpiece for the wealthy was even invited to speak in Wisconsin is a disgrace. Then again, look at who brought him here—none other than the CEO’s Only Club, aka WMC. Is this the kind of dangerous and ridiculous rhetoric that WMC is planning on pushing this budget cycle? Sorry you money-grubbers, but guess what? We’ve ALL got to make sacrifices in this bad economy that you free-marketers helped to create (thanks a lot!), and that means YOU TOO.

A critical piece of legislation that would protect workers all across the state is up for a vote in the WI State Senate, and we need your help.

The Employee Wage Protection Act, Senate Bill 2, would put workers first in the event a business closes or goes bankrupt. In these tough times, it’s more important than ever we stand up for the working people of Wisconsin. Without good bills like the Employee Wage Protection Act, it’s going to be the regular folks of Wisconsin who are going to have it the worst.

Look at the case OWN examined last month—the Virnich and Moores case—that’s currently being heard by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Basically, a couple of business owners paid themselves out millions of dollars while they ran the business into the ground, and then refused to make good on their union contracts and required compensation for the workers  of Communications Products Cororation (CPC). BTW, you can read learn about Virnich and Moores here and here.

If the Wage Protection Act was in place, those workers could rest assured their earned compensation would be the first priority when a business goes under, rather than big banks who come first under current law.   Read More »

In all the hubbub surrounding the landing of Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, there's one consistent and serious omission in nearly all of the reporting: U.S. Airways pilot Chelsea Sullenberger is union-trained.

For all of the attacks unions have sustained over the years from the rabid right, the benefits unions have brought to ALL of us--the 40-hour work week, child labor laws, and now union training (among many, many others) too often go overlooked.

Despite all of the great advances we've acheived thanks to the labor movement, right-wing crazies like Rush Limbaugh and our "representatives," both state and federal who so blindly follow him have been scape-goating organized wokers for years.

It's time we all recognize the good unions do for us--bring back a "labor" section in the paper already!--and cheer these heroes for what they are: union-trained heroes.

(Note: So yinz know, this guy's from dahn nere in Pittsburgh, n'nat.)

With so much going on at the national and state levels, one question progressives may still be asking themselves: Do I support the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Arizona Cardinals in Sunday's Super Bowl?

Earlier in January, more than 40 people were arrested after an undercover investigation in Juneau County that helped to break up a drug-dealing ring.

And currently there’s a $5,000 reward for information about an armed robbery in Juneau County on December 9, 2008.

One would think the top cop in that county, District Attorney Scott Southworth would have several important cases to work on—maybe even more drug kings or bank robbers to go after. After all, it’s his job to keep the citizens of the county he represents safe from drug dealers and other criminals. Heck, the taxpayers of Juneau County are paying him to investigate crimes and put hardened criminals behind bars.

But today, the people of Juneau County are apparently paying for their District Attorney to weigh in on whether or not he approves of a private decision made between a woman and her doctor…in Madison.

Earlier today, DA Southworth sent a letter to the President and CEO of UW Hospital and Clinics detailing his opposition to a new policy at UW Health that would provide safe, legal, and rare second trimester abortions to women in and around Dane County.  The UW is stepping up to fill a critical public-health responsibility to provide the service to women who need it—due to a recent retirement of a women’s health provider in Madison, there are currently no providers in Madison who perform second trimester abortions.

Southworth says that he thinks the UW should “spend its time—and our valuable state resources—to invest in ways to assist low-income and uninsured individuals in obtaining quality health care services.” Well, DA Southworth, this is exactly what they are doing. And I would expect that District Attorneys in this state would spend THEIR time—and out state’s valuable resources—to butt out of a very personal decision that is made between a woman and her doctor. It’s bad enough when lawmakers try to insert themselves into the doctor’s office, but now women have to worry about an over-zealous COP and lawyer too?   Read More »
Yesterday, OWN launched a campaign asking citizens from across Wisconsin to call on Wisconsin law firm Whyte, Hirschboeck and Dudek to drop a case involving one of their attorneys working on behalf of the ultra-conservative (and James Dobson financed) Alliance Defense Fund.

Amy Salberg, a lawyer with Whyte, Hirschboek and Dudek, has been working with the Alliance Defense Fund to defend the Discrimination Amendment, which outlaws same-sex unions, in Wisconsin’s courts. It’s bad enough that the Discrimination Amendment passed, but now Salberg has stoked the flames of homophobia and outright lies in her defense of the exclusionary amendment.

In an Alliance Defense Fund press release earlier this month, ADF-allied attoney Amy Salberg of Whyte, Hirschboeck and Dudek said “activists shouldn’t put children at risk in order to pursue their own selfish desires.”

Salberg’s insinuation that by somehow extending equal rights to all citizens would be dangerous for Wisconsin’s children is outright wrong and downright disgusting. It’s this sort of homophobic fear-mongering that is so hurtful to the debate about this important issue, and it’s more proof that the rabid right will stop at nothing to deny basic rights to our LGBT neighbors.

In response to Salberg’s outrageous recitation of Dobson’s false talking points, OWN asked citizens from around the state on Monday to call Whyte, Hirschboek and Dudek to express their outrage about the firm’s work on the Discrimination Amendment and support of such dangerous rhetoric.

Barely twenty-four hours into his first day as the nation’s 44th President, Barack Obama made it clear that he is not going to tolerate business as usual in the nation’s capital.

Obama’s first act in office placed a freeze on the salaries of top White House aides and to implement new limits on lobbyists working with the Obama administration.

The salary freeze affects those top White House aides making over $100,000 a year, demonstrating a clear break from the disastrous Bush administration by proving that Obama really can talk the talk and walk the walk. “Families are tightening their belts, and so should Washington,” Obama said addressing the press this morning. Finally—a leader who’s REALLY in touch with the difficulties regular Americans are struggling with.

More importantly however, was Obama’s action to limit the influence of lobbyists in the Oval Office. Obama’s first executive order bans aides to the Obama administration who leave his staff to turn around and lobby the government. No more revolving door to K Street. Going even further, Obama also banned those staffers already hired from working on issues they had previously lobbied on, or to lobby government agencies they previously worked to influence. Even FURTHER, Obama banned all lobbyists from giving gifts of any size to those working in his administration.

Thank. God (if s/he/it exists). Perhaps now, regular folks won’t be shuttered out of a government that supposed to be by us, for us. Obama wasn’t messing around—he’s been waiting in the wings, forced to watch the lamest duck we’ve ever had twiddle his thumbs while the proverbial plane was crashing into the mountain. Now, with Obama at the rudder, it’s clear that simply doing nothing and maintaining the status quo is simply not tolerated. Thank. God.

A story in the Capital Times today details the recent programming changes and the resulting listener uproar on the Mic, 92.1 FM, Madison’s only progressive talk station.

As 2008 ticked over into 2009, the Mic, rather quietly, announced that popular daytime show ‘The Thom Hartmann Program’ was going to be replaced by evangelical money-help host Dave Ramsey—the same Dave Ramsey who hosts a similar financial show on the Fox Business Channel. (I’ll leave my comments about having a right-wing, bible-thumping Fox mouthpiece on my progressive talk station for another post….)

However, the change won’t last. Ramsey is moving to the morning slot and Thom Hartmann is moving back to the 2-5p slot on the Mic.

As an avid Mic listener—the OWN office radio is tuned to the Mic at some point every day—I certainly welcome the change back to Hartmann. But the change and change back really drive home the danger of media consolidation that we’ve all grown accustomed to.

$288,460.50

That’s the amount of money the listed members of the board of directors at the oft-called non-partisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance have donated to Republicans and conservative candidates since 1991.

Did they donate to Democrats and liberals? Yes. A whopping $25,475.

To sum: 92% to conservatives. Eight percent to liberals.

In the Thursday morning report, WisPolitics ran a piece on a study from the California-based Reason Foundation that called the benefits of the Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee commuter rail line as “not credible.”

One might ask, what is this Reason Foundation? Who’s behind the curtain, pulling the strings? And why exactly do WE care? We live here after all. They’re in California. What do they have to say that could add anything to a debate here in Wisconsin?

Well, a quick visit to the Reason Foundation website sure reveals a lot. First, like many conservo-mouthpieces, they breathlessly espouse the value of Friedman’s unrestrained free market. And according to the website, they support the “rule of law,” whatever that means. Pretty clear where these guys are coming from. Government? Bad. Unfettered capitalism gone wild, no matter what the human cost? A-OK.

But that’s just scratching the surface. Digging a little deeper, we find the true impetus behind the Reason Foundation’s attack on commuter rail: they’ve got oil on their brains and in their veins.

There’s been a noticeable silence on the part of the right wing Wisconsin blog community about the vanished postings of the previously-oft frothing Jo Egelhoff, who regularly peppered liberals and pro-family economic and social policies on her FoxPolitics.net blog-n-site.

Rep. Steve Nass has won.

A report by the conservative Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance says Wisconsin had the lowest increase in higher education funding of any state in the country over the past five years -- save for Michigan, which actually cut higher education.

JB Van Hollen, the Republican Attorney General who also coincidentally serves as the co-chair of John McCain's presidential campaign, was on Wisconsin Public Radio today talking about his partisan lawsuit to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of voters in predominately Wisconsin's cities.

Over and over again Van Hollen referred those opposing his partisan lawsuit, such as the non-partisan League of Women Voters, the Governmental Accountability Board and its six retired judges, as well as disability and voter rights groups as his "opponents."

How comical is that the Wisconsin representative to the so-called “Palin Truth Squad” is Margaret Farrow?

The “Squad” presumably will criticize anyone who brings up Sarah Palin’s ethics scandal, truth bending, right-wing extremism and revisionist history. Or those who point out that Palin refuses to talk to reporters and won’t answer questions.

A story has been popping around the internets about a lawsuit John McCain’s mom filed against his first wife back in 1980.

While this tale may at long last make the story of McCain leaving his injured first wife to court the millionaire beer baroness to whom he is now married of interest to the media – in the same way Jeremiah Wright’s image was omnipresent for weeks, what would be great it’ll bring up how hypocritical McCain is when it comes to so-called tort reform.   Read More »
