The State of Working Wisconsin 2008

The Center on Wisconsin Strategy has released its 2008 State of Working Wisconsin report and in surprise to very few, the George W. Bush economy continues to batter the state. In what appears to be a consistent theme throughout the Bush economy, the report finds that although productivity is up that many workers are simply not enjoying the benefit. Actually with each year, working folks have struggled more and more in the last eight years. More specifically the report found that Wisconsin has lost some 24,000 jobs since June 2007, 13,000 of which are manufacturing jobs. Wisconsin has a median wage that has fallen in recent years, and has a four-person family income that has fallen nearly $6,000 since 2000, three times the national drop. The report also found that although we have a relatively high health insurance coverage rate, it has been in a steady decline in recent years. One of the key reasons that we are seeing such a drastic decline is because too many employers are shifting away from providing health care for their employees. Unfortunately this is something that Senator John McCain’s health care plan would actually encourage . The rate of employees getting their insurance through their employer has fallen from 73 percent in 1979 to 58 percent in 2006. This change has had a very disproportionate and troubling effect on poverty-wage workers.

Q & A with AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Sara Rogers

Topic: Where America Is Headed OWN: The economy is on everyone’s mind these days. What are you hearing from your members about the failed economic policies of George W. Bush and John McCain? Sara Rogers: Our country is headed in the wrong direction. Unemployment is up, wages are down, and we’re sending too many good, family supporting jobs overseas. We’re watching our nation let the middle class down, and we’re deeply worried about our children’s futures.

Motorcycle parts, engine manufacturer cuts 60 jobs citing ‘economic slump’

At the beginning of this month, Sen. John McCain made a stop (read “gimmick”) in Sturgis, South Dakota in an attempt to energize motorcycle enthusiasts, joking about tire gauges and getting some cheers after making hollow statements like “This is my first time here but I recognize that sound. It’s the sound of freedom and thank you for it.” But the town of Viola, Wisconsin is in no mood to joke or cheer because just last week, S&S Cycle announced that it would be cutting 60 jobs , including 58 from its facility in Viola. The company’s president, Brett Smith, “blamed the economic slump for a downturn in sales” at a time when Sen. McCain believes “ the fundamentals of our economy are strong. ”

The Rising Costs of Bad Policy

We have seen the Bush energy policy at work now for nearly eight years, it seems to be a plan based on not leaving any big oil and gas company behind. The policy appears to be the following simple formula: give a free pass to these massive special interests in any way possible, give them record amounts of handouts from the public and then allow them to “thank” the public by gouging them at every possible turn. This energy free-for-all has most definitely had an impact, unfortunately it has been a hugely negative one for individual citizens and the entire economy. Consumers are paying record amounts at the pump, while Big Oil pulls in record profits . This has a major impact on the price of things like food and other essentials. In many ways it is responsible for a 17 year record high in inflation. As if working people weren’t hurting enough in this Bush economy, now we are getting early warnings about just how much more it will take to heat our homes this winter . Estimates from the Department of Energy project that heating costs will climb 21 percent in the Midwest this year. There is an expected 26 percent increase for homes that stay warm with heating oil. Even with all of the bad news, John McCain has decided to follow the Bush economic and energy “plans”. As it has been previously documented, McCain has already learned how to roll over for Big Oil interests by reversing his own positions. Actually, McCain plans to go even further than Bush in many ways when it comes to appeasing Big Oil. He has not only decided to back Bush’s irresponsible tax cuts for the wealthy but he also gives away the treasury on even more tax cuts for big corporations. Big Oil would receive some $4 billion in additional handouts . It would be difficult to imagine, but such a McCain economy could make a terribly bad situation much worse.

Paw-Lenty of Problems in Minnesota

Minnesota Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty is making his second trip of the summer to Wisconsin. He will be going to John McCain fundraisers in both Madison and Milwaukee that will cost $1,000 per couple. Rather than run around Wisconsin trying to raise money for campaigns, it might be advisable for Pawlenty to go back home and fix the mess that he has made in Minnesota. Under Governor Tim Pawlenty Minnesota’s property taxes are up even though he made a campaign promise not to raise taxes. The Gopher State has actually endured a 70 percent rise in property taxes since 2002. [Sticker Shock, Minnesota 2020, 2/10/2008; Star Tribune, 3/30/03] Not only has Pawlenty’s tenure resulted in higher taxes but also in overcrowded schools and bad roads that are the worst that they have been in decades. In addition, Pawlenty’s signature job creation plan was totally panned by an independent auditor as useless and a waste of money. Even though Minnesota’s housing foreclosures are up to some of the worst levels in the nation, Pawlenty vetoed a bill that would have helped hundreds of families facing the loss of their homes. [Star Tribune, 5/29/08] Given Pawlenty’s terrible record in Minnesota on issues from A to Z, it is a bit surprising that he has been chosen to be a lead cheerleader for John McCain. On the other hand, McCain is the same U.S. Senator that has eventually adopted almost all of the failed policies of the Bush Administration. Those are policies which have led us to economic, health care, energy and foreign policy disasters. It makes you wonder if John McCain has made failure a prerequisite to being one of his key advisors.

John McCain OPPOSES buying American-made motorcycles

John McCain has described "Buy American" provisions as "ludicrous" [Congressional Record, 10/7/05] and has even gone so far as to sponsor and pass amendments to waive them.

On Tuesday, the same day Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett held a press conference at the Milwaukee Building and Construction Trades Council, Steelworkers leafleted USW worksites across the state to spread the word about John McCain's opposition to buying American-made motorcycles like Harley-Davidsons.

Don't Choose a Member of the Tax Cut Choir

Over the weekend the Wisconsin State Journal ran a story about the search for a new head for the Department of Commerce. It addresses how the right choice for the job is particularly important right now, during a challenging economy. The story goes on to quote state Senator Ted Kanavas (R-Brookfield) who trots out the right wing's one trick pony on the economy, endless corporate tax cuts. We have seen how good that approach has worked nationally, but apparently old habits (and knee jerk reactions) die hard for the Brookfield Senator. OWN Executive Director Scot Ross was also quoted shortly after Kanavas saying that tax cuts shouldn't be the first choice in creating a strong economy. He went on to say the following: "The next commerce secretary needs to support spending on roads, schools, universities and municipal services because that infrastructure makes businesses want to stay and move here. Experience shows both in the state of Wisconsin and the rest of the country that tax cuts won't buy loyalty from corporations." Most corporations rely on a decent infrastructure to carry out their normal operations (roads, educated workforce, safety ect) . Most of that infrastructure is provided as a result of taxpayer investment. Blindly cutting away at it or finding ways to keep corporations from paying their fair share is actually counter productive for everyone. There are countless areas where public investment has spurred both the development of new technology and entire industries. Hopefully the new Secretary of Commerce will be a person that approaches the economy from a fresh perspective. Hopefully they will be an advocate for bold and broad solutions rather than joining the overly simplistic "tax cut choir" headed by partisans like Kanavas.

WMC to Members: “(Don't) Read the Fine Print”

WMC has launched a (multi-)million dollar fundraising campaign to its members to finance continued issue-based smear campaigns against progressives who don’t kow-tow to WMC’s pro-corporate, anti-worker agenda. We all know WMC has distorted the records of numerous public officials over the years, most notably in recent efforts to get the ethically-challenged Mike Gableman and Annette Ziegler onto the state’s highest court, as well as put the pampered JB Van Hollen into the state’s top cop slot. These moves were designed to create Supreme Court and Justice Department that lets business do whatever it wants and put to death any remaining consumer protections the people of Wisconsin still maintain.

Same Old Business Response is Getting Sickening

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported today that all the usual business suspects are going to pump cash into an effort to fight the paid sick day referendum. The story further reveals that if they don’t get the result that they want on the referendum, that they will spend even more money by challenging the will of the people in the courts. So what is a person supposed to take from this news? That business interests are willing to invest their money in an expensive ad campaign and possibly a protracted lawsuit but not in their own employees and the public health? Are they really going to launch such an effort to keep some of the poorest workers in the city from having a benefit that most people take for granted? The business interests involved in the fight against paid sick days list all of the same talking points that they have always used when asked to invest more into their employees and the common good. This story is no exception, once again they claim that requiring paid sick days will put people out of business and chase others businesses from the city. How many times have we had to endure this tired old argument? It is straight out of central casting but they have simply replaced the last issue with paid sick days.

Poor Big Oil, Let’s Give Them More Cash

All of the big oil companies have been announcing more record profit for the quarter. Exxon Mobile just reported that it brought in nearly $12 billion dollars in the last three months, which is not only a record for them but also a record for any U.S. company. Similarly the other big oil companies have once again made record profits while consumers struggle to pay record prices at the pump. The pain is not only being felt at the pump because the pain has moved its way through nearly every layer of our struggling Bush/McCain economy. The Los Angeles Times has reported that in the quarter that just ended, Exxon spent $8 billion buying back shares of its own stock and only spent $7 billion in other projects that could helped ease the supply problem. Although conservatives seem to think that Big Oil should get a free pass to drill wherever they want, they fail to notice that they already have access to a large majority of public lands but have done very little with that access. This has understandably led some in Congress to promote a “ use it or lose it ” strategy. In the middle of these record breaking profit announcements by Big Oil, John McCain is running around the country serving as their latest key representative in government. He has earned their recent support by reversing his own position on offshore drilling, a change that has brought in over a million dollars into his campaign coffers in only a month. Even in the midst of such record breaking profits, McCain has sought to hand over many more tax giveaways to his new benefactors to the tune of $4 billion. Just what Big Oil needed, another lacky in Congress trying to create ways to give them even more money.

Questions That McCain Should Answer

In anticipation of Senator John McCain’s Racine town hall meeting Thursday, several concerned Wisconsinites that will be unable to attend offered five questions that they would like McCain to answer. John Valko, President of UAW Local 180 in Racine is concerned about the loss of good paying, family supporting jobs. He wants to ask Senator McCain why the country should continue the harmful policies that he supports which have caused our current economic crisis. This crisis includes the loss of some 92,000 manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin during the Bush administration. Specifically Valko cites John McCain’s support for disastrous Bush policies including unfair trade deals, and massive tax cuts for big corporations and the wealthiest individuals. John Valko's question: “The policies you have championed have resulted in an economic nightmare for families across Wisconsin, so my question is: Why would we want to continue your failed policies which have devastated our country?"

Conservative Talking Point Taxed by Reality

State Senator Kathleen Vinehout wrote a column in the Tomah Journal recently. It debunks the conservative talking point that lower business taxes are a cure-all for everything that ails us. Conservatives have relentlessly parroted the talking point so often that some just accept it as fact without even looking at the actual data. The right wing has also changed the meaning of a “good business tax climate” from one that is simple, fair, and transparent to one that basically doesn’t exist at all. In her column, Senator Vinehout exposes conservative groups, like the Tax Foundation and its Tax Climate Index. She correctly points out that it only measures the level of taxes but fails to give a more complete picture by including the economic growth of each state. Do the states with the lowest business tax actually bring economic growth and prosperity? Vinehout tries to answer that question by comparing the Tax Foundation’s ratings with the latest growth rates in state gross product. Here are just a few of Senator Vinehout’s findings:

A Seat for Two on the Out of Touch Express

Although U.S. Senator John McCain is trying to distance himself from the most unpopular president in recent history, they actually are like two peas in a pod when it comes to being totally out of touch with the average person. Who can forget the presidential news conference in February when George W. Bush was asked about the cost of gas reaching $4 a gallon? He responded with " that's interesting, I hadn't heard that ." Only weeks ago, while he was raising money in California, John McCain admitted that he didn’t know the price of gas and couldn’t remember the last time that he pumped it for himself. Then he tellingly said that he doesn’t “see how it matters” if he knows the current price of gas. This is more evidence of just how out of touch Bush and McCain are on most issues. Perhaps that is why McCain would have the audacity to propose $4 billion in tax giveaways to Big Oil at the same time that they are gouging consumers and reaping record profits. Perhaps it is why George Bush and John McCain would sell off every single public asset to Big Oil even if it wouldn’t significantly affect the cost of gas or solve our long term energy crisis. Bush and McCain have not only shown themselves to be out of touch on the issue of energy but also on the economy in general. How many times have we heard them both say that the “ fundamentals of the economy are strong ” even as average people increasingly struggle with meeting their most basic needs? It seems like every week we get a new example from Bush and McCain of just how out of touch they actually are with the rest of us.

McCain’s Record Has Been a Disaster for Women

Tomorrow U.S. Senator John McCain will be coming to Wisconsin and holding a women-only town hall . John McCain’s record of rubber stamping Bush policies in the U.S. Senate has been a disaster for not only women but for entire country. John McCain actually skipped the vote on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have restored workers ability to pursue pay discrimination claims in court. When a 14-year-old girl asked him about this at a town hall meeting, he told her that protections for equal pay wouldn’t do “anything to help the rights of women.” On the same topic McCain has commented that women simply need “education and training” instead of equal pay protection. John McCain also is a full supporter of unfair trade deals that has led to the loss of countless jobs. Obviously many of those jobs were held by women, they would probably not judge kindly McCain’s record on the economy.

Rewarding Those that Have Us Over a Barrel?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting on the prospect of $200 a barrel price for oil by the end of the year. The price has shot up over the last 7 years but that increase has been much more rapid in the last six months. During that time we have seen it go up from $100 to $150 a barrel. If the price actually hits the $200 prediction, that will translate to well over $6 a gallon for gasoline at the pump. The pain at the pump is only the beginning of the budget crunch for the average working family. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported today that natural gas is also at a high for this time of year. Experts in that industry are predicting major sticker shock for energy customers, especially when we try to heat our homes in winter. Natural gas futures have jumped 82 percent since just the start of the year. The story reports that increases in the price of natural gas have already driven up electricity bills twice since March. All of these costs are overburdening working families and impacting our already fragile economy. This is where the failed Bush policies of irresponsible tax cuts for the wealthy, coddling Big Oil, and lacking a forward thinking energy policy has brought us. U.S. Senator John McCain has been a rubber stamp for those polices in the Senate. He supported Bush as much as 100 percent in 2008 and 95 percent in 2007. In addition, McCain now says that he will make Bush’s tax cuts for the rich permanent. Actually he will go even further by offering unprecedented tax giveaways to some of the biggest corporations in the country. Under this economic scheme, Big Oil would get some $3.8 billion in tax giveaways. To the average person, such a massive giveaway to the very industry that has us over a barrel makes no sense at all. To John McCain it’s just business as usual.

McCain Really Does Need More Education

John McCain has been little more than a rubber stamp for the failing George W. Bush economy. Perhaps this is the reason that he has such a hard time bringing himself to admit that this economy has been very hard on the average American. June was the latest time where John McCain claimed that, “the fundamentals of the economy are very strong. Very strong.” Who exactly was he trying to convince with that statement, himself or the many working families that know different? In June this “very strong” economy lost another 62,000 jobs, making it the sixth straight month of negative job growth. The Bush economy has been a boon for the wealthiest in our nation. John McCain is one of the richest members of the U.S. Senate, but could he really be so out of touch with the average person? Since when is massive job loss a sign of a “strong economy?” It looks like John McCain was right, he really does need more education on the economy .
