General Rants and Raves on progressivism in Wisconsin and the US and A

Yikes! Sykes! Right-Wing Radio Rants

In the most recent edition of The Milwaukee Magazine, former news director of WTMJ radio in Milwaukee Dan Shelley exposes hyper-right-wing radio host Charlie Sykes (and others like him) for what they are—angry right-wing puppets that “exploit the fears and perceived victimization of…conservative-leaning listeners.” Shelley explains how these right-wing blowhards use scare tactics, carefully screened phone calls, meticulously framed arguments and talking points from the Bush White House to scapegoat progressives of all stripes. When Ronald Reagan used line item veto, it was a great way to reign in “liberal” spending; when Bill Clinton used it, it was an egregious violation of the separation of powers. Dick Cheney’s top aide Scooter Libby, when convicted of perjury, was a victim of an over-zealous prosecutor. Bill Clinton’s heinous crime that led to his impeachment? Perjury.

Surprise, Surprise: No One Knows How Many Bush Administration Emails Lost, or How to Get Them

In a development that should surprise no one, the lame-duck Bush Administration continues its refusal to comply with Federal records retention laws that require the White House to save and archive all electronic communication. And worst of all, no one knows how many emails are missing, or how we can get them. A recent inquiry into the archiving process of the National Archives and Records Administration led by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has turned up an incomplete and sorely-lacking plan that raises serious questions about just how many email the Bush Administration is hiding, and the limited avenues the American people have to recovering those messages. According to the plan, obtained by the Raw Story , the Archives are planning for “50-100 times the volume of electronic materials and formats not previously dealt with.” Fine. We all understand that email and other e-communications have exploded during the Bush years, and such difficulties should be planned for. But further on in the report, the Archives says it is "confident that it has the ability to ingest the Bush emails, [but] the timing of this ingestion is dependent on the completion of any ongoing restoration project for the MS Exchange emails undertaken by the EOP." Little known fact: the Bush Administration totally dismantled the Automated Records Management Systems (ARMS) almost IMMEDIATELY after taking office, and implemented a new program utilizing MS Exchange, which has proven to be unreliable as between 5-10 million emails have been deleted from the White House servers. Are we ever going to see those emails or what’s in them? Maybe we’ll get an inside-the-Beltway look at the attorney firing scandal. Or maybe we’ll see who was talking to who about the war in Iraq and Abu Ghraib. Or maybe, if the lamest-duck-we’ve-ever-had Bush Administration have their way, those messages will be lost forever in cyberspace… The Bush Administration being secretive and unwilling to comply with simple open records requirements? I’m not surprised and you shouldn’t be either.

From the legislator who brought the great state of Wisconsin a plan to arm teachers with guns in an effort to curb school violence (you all remember his hilarious appearance on the Daily Show about 2 years ago…), comes another idea worthy of all kinds of jokes and ridicule – lifting a ban on drilling for oil in the Great Lakes.

Joe Leibham throws tantrum over nearly error-free elctions

Joe Leibham, State Senator from Sheyboygan just won’t stop trying to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin voters with his hair-brained voter ID scheme. Even as a new audit of the April 1 election found “nearly error-free voting,” Joe “Still Can’t Prove a Voter Fraud Case” Leibham keeps up the voter ID rhetoric. “I still think there are people getting around those processes,” Leibham childishly retorted when asked about the April election. I once again call on Sen. Leibham to produce one incidence of voter fraud that would have been prevented by his “voter ID” scheme. I don’t expect an answer. Then again, I don’t expect him to end his crusade to stop a problem that doesn’t exist either. I guess that’s the difference between the truth and a Leibham.

A Case Study in Getting a Voter ID

Having looked all over my house for my missing driver’s license, it was clear that I needed to make a trip out to the DMV in Madison to get a replacement—a perfect chance to spell out what goes into a trip to the DMV, like thousands of Wisconsinites will have to do if state leggies and “voter ID” advocates Jeff “Poll Tax” Stone and Joe “Can’t Prove a Voter Fraud Case” Liebham had their way and passed a ridiculous voter ID law in Wisconsin. The DMV office in Madison I went to is open from 8:30-4:15 MWF, and from 10-5:45 Tuesday and Thursday – not exactly convenient for a 9-6 working man. But hey if I want to vote, I need an ID, right Jeff? So I bit the bullet and took off from work at 3 pm on Thursday. So I’m already being charged for my right to vote – losing at least 3 hours of work time, and using 3 hours of my vacation time. So far, total estimated cost: $50. On “normal” days, I walk to work. But today, since I need my car to get to the far-east side DMV, I had to pay to park - $6 more.

Do Wisconsin Women Matter to John McCain?

Watch John McCain tell a 14-year-old girl that she doesn't deserve equal pay.

McCain seems to think that women don't need equal pay protection, they need "more education and training." Check out the video below to hear Sen. McCain's outrageous remarks about his opposition to equal pay for women.
In April, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) skipped the vote on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have restored workers' ability to pursue pay discrimination claims in the courts, and provide protection for women receiving unfair wages. McCain explained his opposition to the bill by saying that instead of equal pay protection, women simply needed "education and training." A 14-year old girl knew better and questioned McCain about his absence and position on the bill to provide protection for equal pay. McCain responded, "I don't believe that this would do anything to help the rights of women."

McCain's Rubber Stamp for Bush on Display at OWN Stamporee at GOP Convention

OWN is hosting a Stamporee event outside the Wisconsin Republican Convention in Stevens Point on Friday, May 16 to demonstrate how when it comes to the failing policies of George W. Bush, Senator John McCain is actually McSame--a literal rubber stamp in his votes in the U.S. Senate.

During the event, an actor portraying Senator McCain will use a gigantic rubber stamp to give his personal seal of approval for Bush's problematic stances on continuation of the war on Iraq, Bush's attack on health care, among many others. As a U.S. Senator, McCain has continuously worked to promote and advance the Bush policy agenda. Senator McCain needs to hear how these policies have failed America and how being a rubber stamp for President Bush hurts Wisconsin residents.

Special guests will also include actors portraying George Bush, Cindy McCain and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, this year's GOP keynote speaker.

Primary Coverage

...and really the coverage of these primaries is misleading, at least on the Democratic side with the proportional delegates. Watching the vote counts certainly gives the winning side some bragging rights to hang their hats on, not being able to see projected numbers of delegates really changes the feeling of finality, even after tonight.

Super Delegates

Well as the vote counts start to pour in tonight, its clear that the increased emphasis placed on the super delegates in the media in the last weeks is justified. At least at this point, Obama seems to be pulling away from Hillary with the regular delegate count (which is actually decided by us, the voters); Hillary is far ahead in super delegates, which make up 40% of the the total delegates at the convention.

Interesting.....stay tuned.

Rudi 9iu11ani

now that rudi is gone, how ever are we going to be reminded of 9/11? well, just to make sure we all remember that day, here's a compilation (not my work, i wish...) of rudi 9iu11ani's never-ending exploitation of that day. oh, and by the way...the Florida strategy? Ha. 9iu11ani spent $50 million there for 1 whole delegate. so sad.

Edwards Out....

I really expected Edwards to push on until the convention, hold his delegates and become king-maker there. I wonder what kind of deal was made...

And here's to OWN getting a shout-out at the end of the internet debate between the candidates for WI Supreme Court last night. I wonder how long its going to take Gableman to find another interim position once he loses in April....

The Sorry State of the Union

Finally. I never have to waste a January night listening to more lies and promises of privatization from this, the worst president I've ever known. As it was, I had to leave when GWB said he wanted health care decisions to be made my "patients and doctors, not in the halls of congress." So quickly he forgets about a middle of the night flight to D.C. and an emergency session of congress to try and stop the private medical decisions made in the Terry Schiavo case not too long ago. Sigh. Less than a year to go everyone!
